THE JOY OF CYCLING

It feels ultimately great to ride a bike specially for kids around and those young at hearts. I can imagine the liberty of hopping from one place to another. You explore the busy streets of the metropolis and even the challenge of thigh burning hills and mountains. Admittedly, cycling is the best way to be physically fit and active. Plus the fact that we can help save the environment. In our real world, this self-propelled power vehicle is kind to our mother nature, and the truth, it saves money in car maintenance, insurance and gas.

Through the years, the Filipinos are slowly but surely getting more attached with the pleasures of cycling in the country. Riding a bike is just a one way ticket to an active lifestyle and of course that would include fun and adventure like Cycling holidays from Skedaddle. While most cycling enthusiasts use a bicycle down to school or work, others wait for the weekend to hit the road and explore the hills on their new-age bikes.

The best part of cycling is that age is not a requirement. For a while, there are far from being the well organized cycling clubs or community in the Philippines but their love for cycling is contagious. I wish I could narrow down all their adventure trips and other road cycling holiday stories. This  activity is no doubt fascinating that everyone, family and friends can be hooked up to.

But let me ask you this, do you get a real joy from cycling? Is it really fun activity in the Philippines? I think the bicycle is remarkably simple, it’s efficient, excellent piece of equipment ever invented in the universe. I asked a couple of cycling enthusiasts and here’s what they had to say.

Dennis Alcantara believes that Philippines has a lot to offer, we already tried biking to Boracay from Dumaguete, nice coastal roads through the mountains and down again to the coast, we even had a side trip to a refreshing waterfalls. And recently I had the amazing experience in Sagada, the majestic mountains with sea of clouds just below it, the breathtaking sunrise and the very kind and hospitable people of the highlands. Really an unforgettable experience.

The best part of cycling

The feeling of moving around on two wheels. The feeling getting to your destination by raw pedal power. Maybe its a child like freedom exploring new places. Getting fit for me is just an incidental benefit.

In the Philippines, there is a good place to ride when you’re starting out

U.P. would be the most convenient place to start biking. It has the environment of greens and some single track which will serve as a good primer for your next real trail ride, yet near the city. And maybe next in mind would be La Mesa Ecopark. It has all type of trails from newbies to veterans all with the supervision of guides.

The most memorable cycling event

I only joined 2 cycling events, the 2nd was the most unforgettable. This was a downhill race event somewhere in San Mateo where I was badly beaten by my numerous falls and spills but at least I tried doing what I love to do.

Franc Ramon on the other hand says that the Philippines has a lot of scenic places to bike though we really should have more bicycle lanes for cycling enthusiasts.

The best part of cycling

I’m a novice duathlete and ride it most for training rides and duathlons. I like that I get the same workout with less pounding on the knee plus almost all the rides are scenic.

In the Philippines, there is a good place to ride when you’re starting out

Regular bike rides are OK in UP Oval since it’s a shared lane with runners. I also do some of my rides in Salcedo Village in Makati since there’s not much cars there. Subic, Nuvali, Clark and Caylabne in Naic have scenic and challenging routes for biking. Daang Hari also has a shared lane for cyclist.

All my duathlons are memorable; the first one in Fil-invest was memorable because it was my first. My time was not that great but it felt like I have maximized the cost of the bike. My second one in Daanghari was also a good one as the straight and fast course helt really exhilarating. My last one in Subic was also memorable due to the scenic route and it felt like flying since I had to catch up because of some problems with my brakes at the start of the race.

Safety tips for cycling enthusiasts

The usual wear helmets, be vigilant on your surroundings and check your bike and gears always before use and bring spare tires too.

I feel bliss when I ride my bicycle and gets to enjoy the beauty of the nature. I feel happy to see God’s wonderful creations while keeping myself healthy.

In the Philippines, there is a good place to ride when you’re starting out

In the Philippines, It’s good when you start riding in Army Trail of Fort Bonifacio. They have a basic and advance trail. They have what they call it the blue and red trail. The blue trail is the basic track, while getting used to it you can proceed to the Red trail which is the advance track.

The most memorable cycling event

When I was able to ride up to the top of the shotgun in maarat without stopping in between. It’s about 5km to 7km of continuous uphill ride. I feel like I’m on the top of the world. After reaching the top of shotgun, i was able to enjoy the downhill track of Patiis, a really difficult DH track yet enjoyable.

Do you take your own bike on a long trip?

Yes, I always take my bike with me on a long trip. Wherever we go with my wife, I take along my bike. When we have an out of town trip I always have my bike with me, and even take it inside our hotel accommodation, even my wife would say, “why don’t you just sleep with your bike” laughs.

Safety tips for cycling enthusiasts

Always wear your safety gears specially your helmet. While biking on the road, if possible stay on a single track to avoid obstruction to other motorists. If you want to go mountain biking, make sure to ride with your friends, If possible do not ride alone.

Because of our equitorial, tropical climate, you can bike all year round, unlike other countries who have constraints on climate.

For Aileen Quimpo Hernandez, every ride in the Philippines is memorable because of the sceneries, the locals, and everything else that makes Philippines unique.

CYCLING IN THE PHILIPPINES

I guess the best part of cycling is the knowledge that you’re doing something healthy for your body in a very pleasurable way. You get to visit so many places and the pacing lets you enjoy the scenery that you would normally miss out when you are driving a car. Also, knowing that you can get from point A to point B with absolutely no expense and emitting no harmful chemicals gives you a satisfaction that you’re on the side of mother earth, not just your wallet .

In the Philippines, where is a good place to ride when you’re starting out?

As someone who’s biked both in the metro as well as the province, I know that the Philippines never runs out of good places to bike. For mountain biking, a good place to start is UP Diliman where you can go around the Academic Oval on a well-designated bike lane. You can then move up to more challenging trails from Camp Aguinaldo, La Mesa Eco-Park, and Timberland.

I’ve also biked in Aklan and there are tons of trails, very picturesque. At the top of my list are the towns of Nabas, Libacao and Malay.

THE JOY OF CYCLING

On her most memorable cycling event

The Tour of the Fireflies have been memorable because there’s a spirit of unity among bikers in the Philippines for a good cause and I get to do it with family.

Do you take your own bike on a long trip?

Yes I do. I know some seasoned bikers can just ride on any bike regardless of geometry or weight. I’m the type of person who locks into my bike I guess. On a long trip, you also learn to do basic assembly-disassembly and repairs when you’re a biker.

Safety tips for cycling enthusiasts

Helmet. Get the right fitting please.

I’m very well impressed with these people. In their own little way they’re able to promote the beauty of the Philippine Islands through cycling. It’s nice to know that it’s getting bigger and so many people are embracing the cycling culture in the country. I strongly recommend that you all try hopping your way through biking around the city. I bet  you’ll find yourself lost in the ocean of new experiences when you start hopping, walking or cycling to your destination or to make other trips. Belive me, a lot of things will start to change. I encourage people who are thinking about active lifestyle to nurse the thought of doing it, and then just do it again. Once you start, you will definitely going to enjoy it.

Go right ahead, Hop and explore the world!
