HOW TO GET TO CALAYAN ISLAND:

From Manila, hop on a bus for about 14 hours land travel to Claveria or Sta. Ana or Aparri, or fly to Tuguegarao in Cagayan, or to Laoag City in Ilocos Norte. That three mentioned towns are the gateway to Calayan. The closest municipality to Calayan is Claveria.

From the fishing port in Claveria/Lakay lakay port or the Aparri port, take a lampitaw boat ride (motorized pump boat) to Calayan. Boats leave between 5 to 7am if there’s cargo that needs to be shipped or if the weather condition permits. Boat rides cost P500/person and can last 5-7 hours from and to Aparri or 5 hours from and to Claveria.

WHERE TO STAY IN CALAYAN ISLAND:

For your convenience one must have a local contact in Calayan or Claveria to arrange ticket reservations. You may contact Tita Conie Agudera: 0921-534-9231. She’s our local contact in Calayan Island.

The trip should take you to majestic islands, each isolated from the others by miles of ocean and totally different in its features. Camiguin Norte has mountains at its center and humpback whales off its coast. Dalupiri on the other hand is a huge block of rock rising up from the sea with sheer walls. Fuga Island meanwhile is as flat as a pancake and has vast grasslands as far the eye can see. Due to unpredictable weather and ocean conditions, the itinerary may not be fixed and getting stranded on an island for several days may happen at all times. The boat rides are rough, long and oftentimes scary. One can encounter big waves on relatively small boats.

The island town of Calayan in Cagayan which is in the middle of Aparri and the Batanes group of islands is a sure winner. If you look into the Philippine map, Calayan is one of the islands closer to the China Sea on the northern coast of Luzon. Calayan is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Cagayan, Philippines. According to the latest census, it has a population of 16,233 people in 2,654 households. Calayan boasts a white sand and sharp rocks that makes it a potential landmarks for tourists. The Calayan islands are one of the Babuyan Islands in the Luzon Strait northern region. It is composed of the four of the five major islands of the Babuyan Islands such as: Calayan, Camiguin, Dalupiri and Babuyan Island in Luzon Strait north of Luzon Island. Calayan Island is the largest of the Babuyan Islands.

Calayan Island is accessible from the town of Claveria, Cagayan and Aparri where an outrigger boats depart regularly depending on the number of packages being shipped to and from Calayan Island.

Summer is just the perfect time for wanderers alike to fully appreciate the wonders of the islands. Seated closest to the bow I thought was the best angle to shoot for the destination. But looking up at the sky encourages us to stop for a moment and appreciate those fluffy clouds stretched from from skyline to skyline. It seemed as if my mind turned into a dream- a beautiful dream.

Our Lampitaw (outrigger boat) seemed to be revving up a little bit only to find out that we’re running at a normal speed. Our boat loaded with softdrinks and other dry goods slowed down as we were approaching the shores of Poblacion, Calayan where our host was waiting. We landed on a beach near the main town, Centro. There is no hotel and restaurant on the island, but homestays are easily available, and your host can arrange to have your food cooked. I immediately plunged into the waters of Poblacion when I figured I had lack of sleep. I can also imagine the 5 hour travel time from Claveria to Calayan and the burning heat of the sun was a torture. Mind you, getting to Calayan is not as easy as piece of cake.

Calayan is simply home to the most amazing cove in the Philippines. I still don’t know why Babuyan is named so. I think that’s part of the islands aura. But I learned a lot more things about the place and its people.

CALAYAN ISLAND ATTRACTIONS: WHAT TO DO AND SUGGESTED PLACES TO VISIT

Avoid the crowds, bars and shops by escaping to this out-of-the-way, still-undiscovered gem of Calayan Islands.

Sibang/Cibang Cove is a 10-15 minute kuliglig (vehicle composed of a two-wheeled trailer pulled by a two wheeled tractor similar to a rotary tiller) ride and a 30-minute walk away from Centro. It boasts a gorgeous fine white sand beach surrounded by limestone cliffs and picturesque rock formations. Camiguin Norte can be seen from a distance but this beach alone is fairly enough for you to visit Calayan. Sibang offers a true escape for tourists. It is still undeveloped, white-sandy beach for everyone to enjoy nature, as well as haven for sunbathers and those seeking for a total romantic seclusion. Calayan is an island with no airports and no banks, offering visitors an intimate, castaway-like getaway. PHOTO BELOW: Snorkeling moments. Hello Mom, I’m under the sea.

Centro Beach has been a perfect destination for everyone who likes to swim, sail, snorkel and dive or enjoy a romantic picnic. The Island of Calayan still has secluded hideaways perfect for diving and snorkeling – if you just know where to look. The island’s shallows are a shelter for various marine life. A couple of yards, huge table-coral formations stands out in improbable layers to catch essential sunlight. The island boasts calm waters year-round, but the best times are from the summer months of March through May, when underwater visibility exceeds 50 feet.

PHOTO ON THE LEFT: The scenic view of Sibang Cove, with Cababaan Cove in the distance. Fortunately, the world is a beautiful place if you know how to look at it. There are three coves located in Barangay Dadao which is approximately four kilometers east from Poblacion. These are Caniwara, Cababaan and Sibang that possess a scenic seascapes in the Philippines.

At the sea lies in the path of great migratory routes as well as being home to many indigenous species. The island is a paradise for wild-flower enthusiasts where the gentle maritime climate encourages prolific survival and reproduction.Wildflowers and wild flowering plants and vines, however, cover the island in great abundance. They provide a combination of colors in many areas.

I first heard of these Coves several months ago while reading EAZY TRAVELER’s blog. On his blog, he raved about everything from the food he tasted and experienced to the accommodations. Everything sounded a crack shot to me. He honestly made it sound like a little piece of paradise.

Sibang Cove has fine white sand, and Caniwara Cove has a slightly flat-rock floor, were pieces of heaven, untouched by modernization. Surrounded by rock formations, the coves can be reached by hiking or by riding a pump boat from the Centro.

PHOTO ABOVE: Scenic Caniwara Cove as seen from Nagudungan Hill. Sibang and Cababaan Coves can be seen on top of Nagudungan Hill. Caniwara cove is just one of the three coves I mentioned earlier. Caniwara cove is relatively closer to the main town. It has a sandy beach, a flat shore with lots of boulders, rocks and stones. In addition to a jaw-dropping view, Caniwara cove boasts a huge diversity of life.

Rocky shores like the Caniwara and Cababaan coves are unique and special marine habitats. They support a massive diversity of life; examples of almost every animal group can be found here. I have seen sea slugs and hermit crabs. This cove is rich with various plants and animals (plankton) feeding the larger animals of the rocky shore. PHOTO BELOW: Rugged landscapes can be found alongside pristine white sandy beaches and coves on Calayan Island.

NAGUDUNGAN HILL It looks like a Batanes famed landscape – Goats wandering and carabao grazed at the quiet area of Nagudungan hill. I have never seen such a jaw-dropping cliffs that are noticeably and distinctively marked by a number of superficial land formations and caves. Needless to say, Nagudungan Hill could be one of the most scenic seascapes in the Philippines.

It may be marked by strong wind, hail, thunder and/or lightning but the powerful winds and waves brought by frequent thunderstorms that hit the area made a thorough and dramatic scene of landscape into a countless of spectacular cliffs seemingly dropping towards the narrow crossing of Babuyan Channel. Birds and eagles can be seen and dominating the sky. Sea eagles catching a prey is a sight to behold but there’s something more to seeing large birds like eagles from the sky to catch their meals. The jaw-dropping black to gray-colored reef limestone rocks of this island will certainly complete your day. Its black & white landscape causes optical illusions and reflects colors when the sun goes down. Most of the rock formations, including its wave, are just spectacular.

Pig: symbol of Wealth, Prosperity and Luck. The pig moves swiftly and with determination. It intuitively knows the best reaction to various situations.

They say that whenever people cross the Babuyan channel, they bring along a pig for a safe trip. On our way home I noticed a pig on board. Our journey to Aparri took about 7 hours on a Lampitaw loaded with a pig, 20 people, some fish, chicken, a big bonsai tree and all kinds of cargo, on a perfectly flat sea.

Almost half an hour into the trip, our roller-coaster boat ride started. Big splashes of waves lifted then slammed our tiny boat into the ocean. Although our bodies were covered and saturated with water, we found the experience memorable and exciting- not until the waves became more intense.

For your convenience one must have a local contact in Calayan or Claveria to arrange ticket reservations. You may contact Tita Conie Agudera: 0921-534-9231. She’s our local contact in Calayan Island.

The Babuyan Islands are as remote as you think and simply getting there is an adventure in itself. One must be brave enough to conquer the trip to the northern-most point of Luzon and the daily 5 hour roller-coaster boat rides on very rough Pacific Ocean seas.

The trip takes you to majestic islands, each isolated from the others by miles of ocean and unique in its features. Camiguin Norte has mountains at its center and humpback whales off its coast. Dalupiri is a huge block of rock rising up from the sea with sheer walls. From Lucena City, head out to the Grand Central Terminal and take a jeepney bound for Lucban. Travel time from Manila to Lucban takes approximately three to four hours.

I also have discovered so many things about this gorgeous destination in the middle of Aparri and Batanes. Featuring attractions and landmarks in Calayan Islands, things to do in Calayan deserve a separate blog posts. The Serenity of the beaches, a beachfront resort on a remote uninhabited island combined with the laid back life in the province is what i like the most!

Getting electricity on a remote island isn’t always as easy as on the mainland but thanks to a reliable fuel powered generators made our lives easier. The other night when the full moon is up, I had a constant conversation with a group of young wanderers who had quite a number of plans for their future. For some reason, I had so much contemplations and realizations at that point. A few thoughts have crossed my mind, but I never envisioned last summer’s trip to Calayan Island would turn to be a summer to remember.

When I was traveling to Calayan Island, I found myself thinking, “This place is great”. How did I get to Calayan Island in the first place? Life offers us with lots of opportunities to meet new faces and to try new experiences, but in some cases we segregate the opportunities because we’re lazy, we don’t want to compromise or we are scared.

Traveling is no doubt one of the most thrilling and exciting experiences one could ever have in their lifetime. Traveling keeps your soul alive, awaken your senses and cover the colorful world in a new shade. It may seem kind of like a hobby for a certain individual, but in real world, anyone can explore the world. Traveling can create remarkable memories which can be a great conversation starter, promotes independence and can also help one figure out what they want to do with their life. Trust me these are just some of the elements that makes traveling so wonderful. The experiences are worth the cost.

Today, I am excited to introduce another travel nutcase, friend of mine, Carla, who is the person behind Blissfulguro.com.

Getting older means potentially having more time to see the world. That’s a great perk of growing up isn’t it? But while a weeklong holiday is relaxing and rejuvenating, it can also take a toll on your body. I bet you will agree with me that routine changes jumps up levels of stress hormones, which can totally damage your immune system, disrupt your health and eventually ruin your special holidays.

There’s a considerable price you need to pay for every time you go away.

But wait, “The good news” is if you carefully plan for everything you can avoid the most common health pitfalls a common travelers face.

Imagine you’re on a perfect summer holiday and feeling you have won a lottery. Suddenly, you’re feeling kind of like the smallest denomination note of the currency of your Paypal or debit card account. Recently I embarked on a long journey to visit Calayan Island in Cagayan and I did not get enough sleep, take enough water and vitamins sooner I ended up feeling so tired and got stressed. I have come to realize that when you aren’t getting enough of certain vitamins in your body, your body structure will malfunction and cannot work at all. Similarly, if your hair suddenly starts falling out or eyes become weak perhaps your body may be lacking of nutrients and vitamins.

NOTE: When your body is fighting off sickness, it’s actually your white blood cells, your body’s soldiers that do the fighting. Dosing up on Vitamin C has been the common practice in boosting immunity but it’s not enough to strengthen your white blood cells.

For the maintenance of overall good health and body functions one must take vitamins.

Your white blood cells need multiple nutrients like Zinc, Vitamins A, C & E to be strong enough to efficiently do its job in beating the germs and viruses, which can make you sick.

No matter how much Vitamin C you take, it will play that same role. Also, our body can absorb and use only up to 400mg of Vitamin C. Any more than that is urinated – that’s expensive urine. Taking 500mg of Vitamin C is enough to ensure that we’re able to absorb just what we need.

WHAT ABOUT CONZACE?

Conzace has a formula to make stronger white blood cells which means stronger immunity.

· Vitamin C develops white blood cells (500mg).

· Vitamins A & E intensify the protection of these white blood cells (100 IU of Vitamin E).

· Zinc multiplies white blood cells so that we can have the right number of white cells to defend us against sickness. Conzace has higher Zinc than other popular vitamins in the Phils. (25mg Zinc).

YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY THIS:

· Search ‘white blood cells’ online and you can find out the truth about immunity.

· Try Conzace in the morning or night. Those who take it at night have said that they experience the benefit of having a good sleep. But don’t take Conzace on an empty stomach (taking it even 2 hours after eating is alright though).

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT CONZACE:

· All nutrients in Conzace have antioxidant properties.

· Conzace SRP is P12.40. It’s available in Mercury, Watson’s and other drugstores.

· It’s the #1 Prescribed multivitamin for Heavy Duty Immunity. It’s been prescribed by doctors for years.

· Format: soft gel capsule

· Talk to Conzace thru www.facebook.com/conzace

But I am now strong willed and determined not to succumb and get sick for days in such a remote destination. I make sure to always rehydrated by drinking enough water and taking enough vitamins. I realized the value of “self-management” via a proper traveller’s medical kit when stress, fatigue on the road strikes. You may never need to use such medical kit but it can keep a wanderlust out of the hospital and save you lots of cash from your piggy bank.

I hate stress. When we come accross stress, the natural balance of our well being is affected in different ways we could never imagine. Fatigue and stress take a massive toll on the immune system so it would be better to always find ways to bring the body back into balance. Keeping balanced, prayer, exercise, eat the right food, vitamins and yoga are all great ways of taking care of yourself and keeping stress levels low.

If you think you’re not going to get sick on the road then you better think twice.

Spread the word!

Admittedly, the Philippine tourism’s slogan is kind of lengthy but it immediately sinks in to everyone. Hope you are enjoying your summer so far.

There are many gorgeous attractions in the Philippines and so many places to choose from ika nga. Last week, I embarked on a long journey again up North. Never before had I embarked on a journey that required so much courage.

WHERE IS CALAYAN?

I am referring to the island town of Calayan in Cagayan which is in the middle of Aparri and the Batanes group of islands.

HISTORICAL SIDE OF CALAYAN

This island municipality is said to have derived its name from an Ybanag word “calayaan” which means “full of ginger.” Calayan is an Ybanag word that translates as “where laya (ginger) abounded.” When the first two Dominican Fathers, Fray Andres Sanchez and Fray Geronimo Morer visited the island group in 1616 they asked the locals what the island was called. The natives then replied as “Calayan”. Perhaps the missionaries sense of smell was attacked by the aroma of the root crop. So that’s when the word Calayan group started. Father Sanchez and Morer did not stay long in the islands. They were followed by other Dominicans: Fray Francisco Capillas as the first parish priest in 1639 and Fray Martin Real dela Cruz, who later became the first Rector of the University of Santo Tomas. Both also did not stay long in Calayan, leaving a word of faith among the islanders who had readily embraced the Catholic faith.

A more dedicated missionary was assigned as parish priest of Calayan immediately upon his arrival to the Philippines in 1684: Fray Diego Pinero O.P. He stayed in the island working with the natives, doing the best of his ability to alleviate and elevate their economic status and at the same time noted in writing the activities and progress of the people in their Christian life.

DAY 0 | 3PM ENROUTE TO CLAVERIA, CAGAYAN

The group decided to meet up at FLORIDA BUS along Lacson Avenue Corner Earnshaw Street, Manila.

So when the opportunity arose for me to join a group of wanderlusts, I never had to think about it and said YES with the thought of another fun filled week of summer holiday for the year 2013. Joining other travelers in the past it’s not relatively new to me so I did not turn around and decided to join the amazing Babuyan+Calayan+Aparri adventure. I previously got invitations to take a trip to Calayan Islands from a different group but I really had no intention of showing up. When I asked Mr. C who were joining us he replied Carla, Kara and other Pipho members. I then immediately responded “Join ako”.

The scorching heat and drought conditions aren’t hurting only the Philippine crops but humans too. I just realized masisira na talaga ang malaporselang kutis ko sa tindi ng init sa Manila so aarte pa ba ko? Lubos lubusin ko na ang pagiging baluga this summer.

Our pink bus (Florida Bus) finally arrived which at first sounded to me like a long boring bus ride. Pero good to go na ang mga lolo at lola nyo!

DAY 1 6AM ARRIVAL CLAVERIA CAGAYAN

In some cases, regardless of how prepared you are, things may not always go perfectly as planned. The weather may be too hot or cold, the service of the restaurant may seem very slow, vehicles, vans may go on strike but these are all part of the travel experiences especially in the Philippines. But the best travelers are understanding and perhaps open minded about the situations that we don’t have any control of and they somehow enjoy this aspect of the experience.

The unpredictable weather condition and rough seas are just some of the greatest challenges when visiting Calayan Island. In most cases, visitors get stranded for days or even weeks, during the rainy season. So I strongly recommend to monitor the weather conditions through your host and PAG-ASA or kay Kuya Kim before heading to the island.

When we learned that the weather and tides were unfavorable, the group went ahead and looked for a good place to stay overnight.

We stayed at the newest beach hotel in Claveria, Cagayan. It has 8 air-conditioned private rooms. 2 family rooms which is good for 6 persons for Php1800/room. Mr. C, Carla, Kara and myself stayed at the Twin-rooms at P1200 per night. For the frugal travelers, non-aircon rooms w/ common T&B starts at Php400/person. Clean rooms, linen and towels.

SMART TRAVEL TIPS: Feel the beach front, its total serenity and ambiance. Buy fish (lobster) at the local market and let the hotel restaurant staff cook the food for an additional fee. Make sure to request for rooms with a balcony. One can also use their video-ke machine for Php5 per song.

HOW TO GET TO CLAVERIA, CAGAYAN: One can hop on a Florida bus in Sampaloc, Manila (near UST); route is Manila-Laoag-Claveria (travel time is approximately 12-13 hours Php730) VIA AIR: Cebu Pacific Air, AirPhilippines and Philippine Airlines fly daily to Tuguegarao. From Tuguegarao, one must hop on a bus going to Claveria or ride a plane from Manila to Laoag, Ilocos, then hop on a bus or van going to Claveria-Sanchez Mira-Tuguegarao.

I must admit I was a little disappointed when our trip to Calayan got cancelled due to weather conditions but everyone initially wanted to maximize our time in Claveria so we had our breakfast and started exploring some of the best attractions in the area. Thanks to our Tour guide/trike driver for taking us to Portabaga Falls in Sta. Praxedes, east of Centro 1. The falls has its simple yet unique charm however the surrounding areas look obviously altered and in need of serious maintenance work. Portabaga Falls Resorts and Inn is managed by the local government of Santa Praxedes. It has a total of 5 pools catering the needs of different age levels. If you want to get around Claveria, you can get in touch with Kuya Walter (Trike Driver/tourguide) at 09488290573 Php400/tricycle.

Claveria is indeed blessed with a gorgeous and scenic attractions which include the following: the Lakay-Lakay Lagoon, the Roadside Park overlooking the Claveria Bay, the rocky formation along the Camalaggaon Caves, Macatel Falls boasting a crystal waters that run throughout the year, the Pata Lighthouse which will surely give everyone a spectacular experience, and the Claveria Beach Resort along the peaceful white sand coasts.

Another way of learning experience is by taking a glimpse of local life. Charge your camera and take a lot of photos of the people, countryside, bay, hills and mountains, streams, rice fields and the scenes of their everyday life. PHOTO BELOW: LAKAY LAKAY LAGOON

DAY 2 AT 7AM

The northern part of the country specifically in Claveria witnessed heavy to medium rainfall so as expected our trip to Calayan got cancelled again. We were seriously about to lose hope so when Tito Homer suggested to take a day tour in Ilocos Norte, everyone gave it a go. 2008 was the first time I had set foot in the areas of Ilocos Norte and blogging is something new to me back then.

I have seen the Bangui windmills back when I was a child and admittedly I fell in love with that place right after I saw it. It reminds me of my childhood when I’m just walking around or on my way which is such a magnificent sight to behold dancing with the stars and I am always impressed with it. Other gorgeous destinations we visited are the following which I am about to blog in a separate entry: Blue Lagoon, Bantay Abot Cave, Kabigan Falls and so much more.

DAY 3 LAKAY LAKAY PORT | ENROUTE TO BABUYAN CHANNEL AT 6AM

Finally, our trip to Calayan Island went through OK. The Lampitaw (motorized pump boat) is predominantly the transportation since there were no other means to go to and from the island. The challenging part of the trip is when the rough water and big waves ( I am talking about HUGE WAVES) come at times. The locals from Calayan got used to it but for neophytes like me and the rest of my friends felt uncomfortable about the rough boat experience. I can imagine the bumpy boat rides when I visited the scenic island of Palaui but this one is extremely different. Once the Lampitaw nears Fuga Island, it means that you’re half way through Calayan.

Tita Connie (our host) greeted us with a smile when we arrived.

WHERE TO STAY IN CALAYAN

San Jose Inn is privately owned by Mr & Mrs Conie and Francis Agudera, blessed with amazing children Jemar and Aldrin, who became our friendly tour guide for almost a week in Calayan. Rooms are located on top of the small grocery store that sells anything from dry goods and food like bread, fresh fruits, vegetables and a lot more things. Tita Conie is the most accommodating person I have ever met in my whole life I swear to God. She’s a fantastic chef and she served us a variety of special home goodies in their bar and cafe area. Tita Connie I love your GINATAANG lobster, halo-halo and saba con yelo.

DAY 4 EXPLORING WATERFALLS OF CALAYAN

Aldrin suggested to visit Bataraw Falls first. On our way to Bataraw, a family of pigs of varying colors from the usual pinkish white, to black with white spots with a combination of Tangerine, brown and black. Pigs that come in all shades of black, grey, brown, brown with pink ‘spots or splashes’. Konti nalang at makukumpleto na ang color wheel. When Carla stated that Babuyan Island was named after its big population of wild pigs. I have come to think about it promise. Isa itong revelation do you agree Christian?

Calayan is a wildlife protected area with marine resources around like the crab, shrimps, lobsters, large clam, squid, octopus, tortoise and sea cucumber. The endangered species giant clams, sea turtles, and dolphins can still be seen in the Babuyan Channel during trips using the lampitaw.

A flightless bird called ‘PIDING‘ by the locals of Calayan can also be seen in the island. It is small and dark brown, with a distinctive orange-red bill and legs. One of the species of Gallirallus and it can only be found in Calayan. This bird was discovered in 2004 by a group of scientists visiting the island.

Meanwhile, Caanawan Falls is a 30-45 minute trek to reach the enchanting falls. The route up to the falls is quite rugged and usually quite slippery, I remember Carla was too concerned with her DSLR and almost fell on the slippery rocks. This waterfalls should be categorized as semi hard which reminds me of Ditumabo falls in Aurora.

SCENIC SIBANG BEACH

Getting off the beaten track of Calayan Island makes for an extra rewarding experience while you stay overnight at the Sibang Beach. We wanted every moment to be a learning experience for all of us. Our camping adventure at the Sibang beach also reminds me of our trip in Calaguas in 2012.

DAY 5 JAW-DROPPING LANDMARKS & MORE WATERFALLS

It looks like a Batanes’ famed landscape – Goats wandering and carabao grazed at the quiet area of Nagudungan hill.

The best time to go to Calayan is in the summer months of March to May. Bad time is during September to February, where the southwest and northeastern monsoon winds come.

Explore waterfalls, caves and beaches.

Setting Expectations- There’s no night life, no airport, no restaurant, no resort and no public market.

Riding a Lampitaw is a moment you will certainly remember so prepare to be under the heat of the sun for hours. Apply a sunblock to protect your skin and protect your gadgets valuables with plastic.

Hire a motorbike, tricycle or kuliglig (farm trailer) to get around town.

Boat trips and weather conditions are unpredictable so prepare to extend for a couple of days in the area.

Try to local Banayuyu Wine – A local wine made from banayuyu, which is a wild berry from the grape family that can only be found in Calayan.

For your convenience one must have a local contact in Calayan or Claveria to arrange ticket reservations. You may contact Tita Conie Agudera: 0921-534-9231. She’s our local contact in Calayan Island.

These are the places that I am sure you have never heard of. With the help of cheap travels or cheap flights online, many of these gorgeous sites are easy to get to, but often go unnoticed. Sure one can visit and travel around the globe but have you ever driven outside your own towns, cities and seen what lies in the countryside? Do not miss these gorgeous places when you take your next trip!

Traveling in group can be a lot of fun. Imagine those remarkable, day-to-day experiences that can lead to a lasting memories together. The event’s objective is to share knowledge and practices on environmental conservation to the youth in a fun manner. The event is entitled “Earth Defenders”.

Held last April 20, 2013, “Earth Defenders” is the Museo Pambata’s annual Earth Day celebration which aims to impart knowledge and practices on environmental conservation to the youth in a fun manner.

Around 70 children from various cities in Metro Manila joined the activities. They were split into five groups, who they worked with for the rest of the day.

Ms. Sarah Queblatin facilitated the event sharing Mandala Earth Story, with the assistance from the museum’s volunteers. She began by leading the children into a guided meditation and body awareness. In this process of knowing one’s self, it becomes much easier to be aware of the problems of the planet.

Queblatin likened our bodies to the elements of our planet, and the children learned more about this concept by making body maps in their respective groups. Their body maps were discussed and displayed at the museum’s Changing Exhibits gallery.

She also discussed the problems that can be seen in the Smokey Mountain in Mountain Province, where she volunteers as a storyteller. Through a slide show, she presented how the residents of Smokey Mountain overcame their problems by being resourceful and innovative.

To sum it up, each of the groups decided on a symbol as their representation, which they incorporated into a mandala: a spiritual symbol that represents the balance of the universe. The children also made seed balls, which they either took home or gave to the museum for planting.

The event was supported by the following companies: SMEJ Catering Services, Jollibee – Rizal Park, Chowking – Luneta, Magic Creams, Cream-O, and Big Sip.

Puerto Princesa is now famous for being the Eco-Tourism Capital of the Philippines. With its massive increase in the number of visitors every year, many establishments like hotels offering cheap hotel deals, cheap accommodations or lowest hotel rates. Some of establishments boast a range of special offers, savings and exclusive deals which feature a selection of 4 star, 5 star and luxury experience throughout the whole season to cater to an increasing quantity of local and foreign tourists. Noticeably, there are also an upscale selection of restaurants, family shopping centers, bars and other tourism related businesses.

In Spanish, Puerto translates as Gate or Port and Princesa means a Princess. So, Puerto Princesa literally means the Port /Gate of the Princess. Puerto Princesa Philippines sits across 253,982 hectares of land stretched over 106 kilometers and considered as the largest city in the Philippines. In terms of biodiversity Puerto Princesa makes a large contribution to the rich flora and fauna collection of the Philippines.

There are plenty of cheap flights available courtesy of the Philippines low cost airline companies. You can actually get the best deal of cheap flight tickets or discount flights to any destinations through out the county. But before you find cheap deal online, you might want to read the list of places to visit and things to do in Puerto Princesa.

One of the popular places to visit Puerto Princesa is the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park or the Puerto Princesa Underground River which is located 50 km north of the city. It was dubbed as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. Puerto Princesa is the jump-off point for exploring the Tubbataha Reef.

Before you head to El, Nido for gorgeous beaches, this is the place you should not forget. Be acquainted with the natural wonders of river and caves. Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park or the Puerto Princesa Underground River boasts an Underground River Cave – which is more than 24 km long cave containing an 8.2-kilometer-long underground section of Cabayugan River. It can be navigated with a boat up to 4 kilometers from the sea. Stalactites and stalagmites can be seen everywhere including several large chambers, the 360-meter-long Italian’s Chamber with approximate 2.5 million square meters in volume. This is one of the largest cave rooms in the world. The park has a limestone mountain landscape with lots of monkeys, snakes, lizards and other wild animals. Puerto Princesa underground river is an amazing natural wonder in our world.

FEAR FACTOR [TAMILOK]: Every now and then you have to give in to your food cravings. If you’re a sucker for oysters then I strongly recommend you try these elusive tamilok of Puerto Princesa. This local delicacy can be sold anywhere in restaurants or public markets. If you’re up for a fear factor challenge or strong enough to try new experiences then explore the local Tamilok food experience.

The tamilok, a wood worm which can be found in the barks of mangroves. One can dip it in vinegar and it tastes like oyster. Tamilok is a popular local delicacy in Palawan. It looks like a worm, a mollusk found inside rotting mangroves.

SMART TIP: For a neophyte like me, tamilok doesn’t really look like appetizing at all. Locals say it’s an alternative dish for pulutan (dish consumed while drinking). I believe for first timers like me, one must need about a couple of minutes and some provocation from friends before you eat that dish.

SHOPPING IS MORE FUN: There are areas where one can choose from a selection of stalls selling souvenir and “pasalubong” items.Do not forget to buy souvenir from Puerto Princesa. Various items are sold in their public markets and souvenir shops. Dried fish, cashew nuts, big bottle of cashew wine, containers of Spicy Dilis, some white pearls, personalized keychains, ref magnets, tshirts and a lot more interesting items.

UGONG ROCK EXPERIENCE: Ugong Rock seems to be one of the interesting places for adventure seekers alike. Ugong rock is a limestone rock formation sitting at Baranggay Tagabinet and stands about 75 feet high which is about an hour or two from Puerto Princessa city center. It is the way to the Underground River jump off point so it’s highly recommended to explore in the morning while waiting for your turn for the Underground River tour.

SPELUNKING/CAVING is a sport in which people explore caves. This caving experience in Palawan reminds me of an exhilarating journey to the deep, dark depths of Lumiang and Sumaguing caves in Sagada. Spelunking at Ugong Rock Adventure is certainly one of the recommended activities in Puerto Princesa. The highlight of this activity is to go spelunking until one reaches the highest part or the peak of the mountain and a zip line experience after. One can get to learn something about the limestone formations which gives participants a better understanding about cave explorations.

SMART TIP: Wearing the usual head and hiking gear is highly recommended.

ZIPLINE EXPERIENCE:

I am all set for the zip line from the Mountain top of Ugong Rock below the rice fields YEY! The best part of Ugong Rock caving is reaching the top of the cave and zipping down at the high and fast speed. Would definitely try this again next time. “Look Mom I am flying” I was screaming like a baby and I thought its worth the money and experience too.

SMART TIP AND SCHEDULED HOURS:

Spelunking Fee: P200
Zip Lining Fee: P250
Length of Zipline: 330 meters (21 seconds)
Ugong Rock Opening hours: 8AM – 5PM everyday

HONDA/HUNDA BAY ISLAND HOPPING: Most of the hotels in Palawan are tied up with Tourism accredited tour operators. Honda Bay Island Hopping consists of Pambato Reef, Pandan and other gorgeous Islands in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Pambato Reef, Pandan island, and other islands.
Pambato Reef: Pambato Reef is a marine sanctuary where one will see gigantic clams, various coral types and group of fishes.
Pandan island: Dubbed as the whitest and finest beach through out Honda Bay.

SMART TIPS:

Take pictures.
Protect your camera.
Snorkelling gears and equipments can be rented.
Protect your skin by applying a sunblock.
Joining small group tours can save you money and make some friends at the same time.
Ask your hotel frontdesk for tour guide services.

MUSIC, FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT AT SALO BAR: Salo, a local resto-bar situated besides the Legend hotel, provides food and entertainment experience to its guests. There’s always something happening at The Salo Bar featuring live music, live bands & entertainment. Spend your night in Puerto Princesa to a fun filled dinner with music-slash-videoke session at Salo Bar and Restaurant. Mars Parao is the regular singer who performs modern and not so modern requested songs to bring us closer to today’s genre of music.

BAKERS HILL: Hopia is a tasty and flaky pastry originated from the early Chinese immigrants in our culture. If you’re a sucker for Hopia then Bakers Hill is a perfect place to get delicious and reasonable souvenir or pasalubong item. It has also a playground for the kids and for kids at heart. Other must try experience would be the oven-baked pizza and other baked goodies.

CHICKEN INATO: One of Puerto Princesa’s recommended restaurants is “Chicken Inato”. Inatô translates as “Chicken natin ‘to” or “This is our Chicken” but aside from the main menu their dessert is superb. I can still imagine those cream-filled cakes and fruit-topped tarts to sky-high strawberry pie and sprinkled with chocolate fudge and candies.

KINABUCH’ CROCODILE SISIG:

Puerto Princesa is also well known for its Crocodile Farm and Nature Park. Kinabuch Bar and Grill is a restaurant in Puerto Princesa offers remarkable dining experience with beautiful ambiance and great choices of Pinoy cuisines. If you happen to be in Palawan, one must try the crocodile sisig. It is the perfect pulutan (dish consumed while drinking) or finger food which can be paired with an ice-cold beer. Kinabuch bar and grill has a multiple television channels with big projector which allows guests to watch but that didn’t really entertain much unless you’re bored. The Crocodile Sisig was so delicious with an interesting texture. It’s a little bit oily though however the combination of sweet and salty flavor makes it tasty and flavorful.

HOW TO GET TO PUERTO PRINCESA:

Via Air
From/To Manila
Airlines from Manila to Puerto Princesa takes approximately an hour and fly on a daily basis via Air Philippines, Cebu Pacific, Zest Airways and Philippine Airlines.

Getting Around PUERTO PRINCESA

STYLE AND SCENE IN CHICAGO FOR MEN

If New York seems too used up, or if LA doesn’t quite fit into your plans, then look to Chicago. Chicago is often left out of the tourist trail, and as such it is a lure for some types of people who prefer big cities that can offer the best of cosmopolitan lifestyles while remaining authentic and removed from the conventionality of tourism. While you’re in town, use HostelBookers.com for cheap accommodation in Chicago neighborhoods where you can plan to be close to some of the following bars, restaurants and shopping spots. The list is mostly geared toward men, but that’s not to say that these locales can’t also be frequented by women.

Style:

Michigan Avenue

For men looking to do a little shopping while in town, then surely you’ll have to make it to the Magnificent Mile. Michigan Avenue runs north-south, and at River North is where you’ll find all the top brand boutiques for clothes and shoes, the Apple Store, various cigar outlets and Uno’s Pizza for the quick deep dish slice in between sprees.

Boys Town Shopping:

Boys Town is a northern Chicago neighborhood where in addition to diverse mix of bars, you will find a diverse mix of shops suited for guys. From biker shops to army surplus stores, the Salvation Army to an eclectic mix of record stores, Boys Town is so appropriately named that it would be reckless to not include it in an article like this. The best way to experience it is to just go and allow yourself to be footloose.

Hangouts:

The Anthem

This is a great bar for guys who couldn’t get into Wrigley but want to see the game with other fans. If you’re not from Chicago, then catching a Cubs game is a sure way to feel the spirit of Chicagoans. At The Anthem, you’ve got everything you need to enjoy a match, including a delectable menu of beers and ciders, projector screens for that close-up feel, and an air hockey table for in between innings.

Delilah’s

You might not be a whiskey guy, but assuming that many men who read this are, then keep an ear perked for the purported best whiskey bar in town. This place wins not for its elegance, of which it has little, and not for its eye candy, of which it has just one: it wins for the 400-some varieties of whiskey on the wall. So sit down and stay a while to build your knowledge from some people who know whiskey.

The Office

If you enjoy a cool speakeasy, if your wallet doesn’t mind the abuse, and if you appreciate a challenge, then The Office is your target case. Once you weasel your way in, you will soon realize that the warnings here were serious as per the wallet walloping, but you will also encounter the anti-venom in the form of fabulous cocktails and welcoming vintage seating.

Drumbar

To get some fresh air, Hotel Raffaello has a bar open to the breeze atop 18 stories of modest elegance. Thus you find your way to Drumbar, where you will feel perfectly comfortable thanks to that keen feeling of privacy that height so often affords. You could easily get carried away by your drunken vertigo and spend the rest of the night lounging here, unless it’s wintertime.

Bangaan rice terraces is just one of the five sites that were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. Bangaan rice terraces and Batad rice terraces are both in Banaue, which is a 4th class municipality in the province of Ifugao, Philippines. Three other sites are Mayoyao Rice Terraces (in Mayoyao), Hungduan Rice Terraces (in Hungduan) and Nagacadan Rice Terraces (in Kiangan), all in the Ifugao Province, the Philippines.

It was impressively built 2000 years ago and passed on from generation to the next. It was also built on steeper surfaces than many other terraces. Generally, the Ifugao complex of brick stone was carefully carved by the early Ifugaos with the natural layers of hills and mountains to make an alley of terraces and pond fields, added with the development of a delicate irrigation systems. Evidently, the villagers here are familiar with the concept of rainwater harvesting. Rainwater harvesting just so you know is the accumulating and storing of rainwater.

HOW TO GET TO BANAUE

From Manila, Banaue is 333 kms. North along Maharlika Highway which passes through the provinces of Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Cabanatuan and San Jose cities. There are air conditioned buses from Manila going directly to Banaue. Ohayami trans is a bus line that operates a route from Manila- Banaue (v.v). Most of its employees are Ifugaos, promoting local employment. It is lso a cheaper shipping alternative for Ifugaos to ship their products to Manila. One can have a comfortable ride and a good sleep when you travel at night. When you arrive in the morning after approximately nine hour travel time and intermittent sleep, one will be welcomed by the stunning view of the rice terraces.

I was talking to a friend of mine asking what the exact date today and she replied almost feeling nostalgic. It’s “C’s birthday today.

Suddenly, I smelled a bittersweet longing for things in the atmosphere. “C” was the one who broke my heart.

The truth is LOVE can sometimes rip our hearts out, we throw it to the ground, then we would pick it up and dust it off and give it back to them. People came to our lives for various reasons. Sometimes people are meant to stay with you but they get out of our lives for good reasons. They stay for just a while at least making things all right, some could be painful, some could be harsh that destroys our well being. The worst thing could happen would be turning their backs and leaving our lives in a soul of emptiness.

In life we have often marveled at how the NEXT love has proven to be so much better than the one before. And then the NEXT one after that was so much better than that last one. And more often that not – will never gonna change – maybe because we learn at least something new from each of these experiences . So, when you’re ready to fall in love, (don’t rush things) start looking forward – to the next possibility.

Realistically, some of our experiences were taken from our favorite movie. I bet if you were the director or writer you would want to give yourself the role of a little poor soul suffering from so much pain of love seeking revenge for what was taken from you while being tortured with lost fortune and despair. Diba ang saya lang. Kuhang kuha mo ang lead role.

LOOK MOTHER I’M FLYING: [Photo by Elal] Looks easy, but to get this shot just perfectly, you might need to redo it over and over again until the photographer gets tired, meaning you’ll be tired in no time. But I thought this was funny.

But wait, I feel that this is not the kind of story I intend to write today. So let’s leave the topics of pain, four seasons of loneliness, craziness and the art of writing a mini series of epic proportions instead we’ll focus on things that will make you happy at least just for reading this blog. I know that most number of people dream of embarking on a long epic journey. You’ll envy them like me. But trust me some of these stories will last a lifetime and will certainly remember and inspire you.

I have always been tagged in posts by friends and seldom approved unpleasant, funny and silly pictures of myself on my timeline but for today I am allowing myself to post it just for fun ( with hesitation ).

JUMPSHOTS FOR LIFE : Believe me I love jump shots. I think people from different walks of life regardless of age and gender love the feeling of jumping and soaring high above the air. I am surrounded by snappy and happy companions when I travel. It feels great to see your pictures next to a beautiful landmark into something really stupid and funny. I think I have learned the art of jumping shots already. In some cases, it takes quite a few clicks to be able to sync everyone’s jump and get a perfect shot. But it’s worth it.

IMMITATION IS THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY: Photo by Renz. For this photo, we tried to mock a famous personality in the blogosphere. Perhaps I find this cute and I personally know that it is a harmless attempt to imitate him. I guess it’s tastefully done. What do you think? [BALER]

DON’T BE STUPID: I strongly suggest to have a back up for your old photos and never store it in your memory card because in a blink of an eye it could be gone in 60 seconds. I was really stupid and had a huge meltdown when my old photos went blank. So as a STUPID ME, I went to my camera setting “Custom Functions” menu, adjust the iso setting basically messing around with the settings and accidentally pressed something. Next thing I know, All my photos are gone with the wind.
DON’T DRINK TOO MUCH:

It is important to control and drink responsibly. Too much alcohol may lead to slight amnesia, commonly known as blackout drinking and can really be so dangerous.

Today, I try not to drink too much because when I’m drunk, I bite.

KEEP THE HEATINESS AWAY: Before I end this post, let me leave you with this interesting, funny and very stimulating poster taken during our Binondo Food Appreciation tour. These are just some of the funny photos that was not funny then. Looking at them right now gives me more reasons to smile big time.

Summer means many different things to different people. No classes for students. We all like that aren’t we? For busy working people, file your vacation leaves. Take a break and have a life this summer. And remember keep the heatiness away.

We all have our own story to tell. Sometimes our stories could be sad or funny or may surprise and amuse us. Recently, I convinced myself that the most interesting people are out there who are lost and hiding somewhere, the person who read this blog or could be the person just sitting beside you. Madami silang lahat. Life is beautiful so living with a negative attitude only makes it worse. Always try to look at the good things in a positive perspective.

Ikaw sinong napasaya mo today?
