Traveling gives us the opportunity to discover new cultures, meet interesting people, taste new dishes and engage in a new passion. Regardless if it’s a beach holiday, from an off the Beaten Path to a popularly known destination or a cultured city wanders, getting away from it all is surely one of life’s simplest pleasures.
It gives us so much of beautiful and not so beautiful experience , life’s perspective, understanding history, culture and such vivid memories that will certainly last a lifetime. Traveling is all about making memories indeed and building connection to your environment. Read magazines, blogs or books about the particular destination you want to visit and get to know its people and culture. Keep a diary of your trip and blog about your experience. Mingle with the locals whenever possible and try out some of the local practices. Capture the wild moments of your trip as you go along, and upload them to your Facebook, twitter, Instagram and other social networking sites to keep friends updated with your journey. Even start planning for your next trip alone or in groups –I would always like to nurse the thought of booking that next cheap airfare to an exotic holiday destination as much as possible.
This love month, I strongly encourage you to plan your trip. Probably taking a cycling holiday cruises through out the Philippines or sail down the seas of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao like what I did last year. Or better yet climb the highest mountains so you can see the world below. And before I talk more about going for a romantic escape, I will introduce this month’s travel nuts Christian Lucas Sangoyo who is a certified travel and photography nutcase.
ON BEING A BUDGET TRAVELER
I’m a budget traveler. As much as possible, I want to lessen my expenses when out on the road, since it means longer travel dates and more locations covered. I’m not an adrenaline junkie and I’m really not that sporty but I love exploring places rather than sitting on hotels or resorts all day. But don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against people who enjoy that kind of traveling lifestyle.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT TRAVEL PEOPLE LOVE?
Traveling broadens one’s perspective on things. It forces you to deal with things outside your comfort zone. It makes you talk to people you normally wouldn’t. Makes you eat things you won’t even touch at home. Makes you respect people outside your circle. It makes you realize that you are not special and there is something so much bigger than you are. It humbles you.
ABOUT HIS TRAVEL BLOG
Lakad Pilipinas started out three years ago. My original aim was to monetize it, but two years later and it still wasn’t making money. By that time, I was enjoying travel blogging so much that turning it to a cash cow has taken a backseat. It features both the touristy and off the beaten path the country has to offer.
As much as possible, I try to incorporate good writing with good photography to give justice to the places I’ve been in.
HIS NEXT TRAVEL DESTINATION
I’ll be heading to Davao in a few days time. It’s my first time there. If you look at my Lakbayan Map, Mindanao is a big white canvass compared to the Luzon and Visayas Islands, so I’m sort of trying to make up.
ABOUT HIS FAVORITE DESTINATION
I love Batanes! I love the culture, the friendliness of the locals and the landscapes there, absolutely mind blowing. I’m not kidding when I say that beautiful sceneries are the norm there. The only thing is, it’s so expensive to go to Batanes.
Another favorite is Baguio City. I know how chaotic it has become but I still love it nonetheless. Last year, I couldn’t believe I went there for five times.
THREE FAVORITE BLOGS HE REGULARLY VISITS
I love Lantaw’s, his photographs are simple jaw-dropping. I just wish I can shoot like that. Writing-wise, I like how Robbie of The Travelling Dork carelessly incorporates humor in his posts. And of course, who doesn’t visit Ferdz Decena’s En Route, no explanation needed.
BEST THING ABOUT TRAVEL BLOGGING
The best thing is that with a click of a mouse, you can literally see and read about what happened to your life a year ago or five years ago. It’s like a personal time machine you’ve created for yourself.
WORST THING ABOUT BLOGGING
Backlogs! I’m not sure if there’s a travel blogger without a backlog. We travel so much that our writings simply cannot catch up with the contents junked on our computer drives.
WHERE HE GETS INSPIRATION FROM
Definitely from the places I feature. It’s hard to write about a place that ain’t pretty right?
WHEN WILL YOU STOP TRAVELING?
Now what kind of question is that?
TIPS FOR ASPIRING TRAVEL BLOGGERS
Take lots of pictures, jot down beautiful notes, blog only when you want and write from the heart. Don’t force it just so you can say you also have a travel blog. Don’t try to copy other blogs, it has to reflect your own personality.
Thank you Christian for giving justice to your slogan Tara, Lakad na Pilipinas!
Christian Lucas Sangoyo is available for photo and writing assignments.
