SOCIALMEDIA

I opened my Facebook account earlier this morning and a group called the Philippine Internet Freedom Association caught my attention. The group at the moment is encouraging more Filipinos to turn their Facebook profile and cover photos into a black image as a sign of protest against the very controversial Cybercrime bill which I personally believe there are some bullet points that we Filipinos should be very afraid of. Netizens are currently taking action towards what is perceived to be a draconian law covering the Internet.

BLACK OUT CALL

Anyone who uses the INTERNET can be charged for libel. You.Me. All Filipinos. Yes. A new Cybercrime Law in the Philippines could see Filipino people sentenced up to 12  years in jail just for posting derogatory statements, criticisms or comments on Facebook or Twitter. This also includes re-tweeting or re sharing libellous material on social media could bear the full force of the new law.

Now if the court junks these petitions, the new Cybercrime Prevention Law will take effect the following day and will soon be forever changing the Social Media and Internet landscape in the Philippines— As a result even killing the entire Internet freedom…
