Any seasoned traveler would want to go off the beaten track and away from overly crowded tourist spots. You would want to explore the country you’re visiting as a local and see the non-commercialized areas for a truly authentic travel experience. The world is an unusual but gorgeous place, and if you’re looking for an adventure, it’s wise to not sign up for the basic and usual tours everyone does, but sign up for an unusual adventure instead. Below are some travel activity ideas you can do that are unusual, enjoyable and far from mundane.
Take the Galapagos Islands cruise in Ecuador
The Galapagos Islands are a place of wonder that should be on top of your bucket list. This World Heritage Site is known for its breathtaking landscape that includes barren volcanos, white sandy beaches and the bluest of waters. The 19 islands were actually what inspired Charles Darwin’s Evolution theory. They are considered to be nature’s museum displaying the most beautiful marine and wildlife. On the Galapagos Islands, you can see penguins, sea lions, giant land tortoises, exotic birds and many others living in their natural habitat. These facts are just some of the many gorgeous aspects of what the Galapagos Islands have to offer.
Go swimming in Antarctica
Antarctica has always been the go to spot for the perfect adventure with an array of activities. Even though swimming would be the last thing on your mind when visiting Antarctica, it’s surprisingly a very popular activity. There’s no better place to do it than on Deception Island; a volcanic caldera located near the tip of the peninsula of Antarctica. Even though its volcano is active, it’s actually a safe and sheltered harbor. Many travelers go to explore Deception Island for its beauty as well as take a dip in its thermal waters. It’s not as freezing as you would expect, but warm enough for a super quick dip!
Experience Irish Folklore at the Giant’s Causeway
This dramatic coastline with around 40 thousand basalt columns interlocking, caused by a volcano eruption, is one thing you shouldn’t miss. Legend has it though that it was created by angry giants who threw rocks out onto the sea. The 60 million year old landmark in Ireland boasts an array of activities to view this mythical and gorgeous landscape. You can hike up along its narrow coastal trek for 4.5 miles to view the ruined castles, emerald fields and dry stone walls. It’s also the perfect place for bird watching and stunning photo ops.
Go camping near Thor’s Well in Oregon, USA
On the edge of the Oregon coast, sits a gaping and bottomless sinkhole with streams of sea water around it. Called Thor’s Well, it’s known to be a dangerous but a breathtaking site to visit. Camp at Cape Perpetua to enjoy its gorgeous scenic area and forests. The best time to visit Thor’s Well is an hour before the tide is high to see the formations without water, and then observe how it fills up with high waves. You can stick to the tourist trail, or go closer when the tide is low for a great picture.
Zip line to the Dark Cave in Vietnam
Asia is famous for its adventurous zip line routes through gorgeous scenery. The Phong Nha National Park in Vietnam is incomparable as it houses over 300 different grottoes and 400 million year old caves. Take the 400 meter zip line through the gorgeous greenery, over the river and all the way to the opening of the Dark Cave. Finish off your adventure with a swim and an obstacle course.
Spice up your travel experience by going where no average tourist has gone. The world has so many strange and gorgeous wonders yet to be discovered. Toss out the old guide book, and look up far more interesting and intriguing sites. Take in the culture, the scenery and the adventure any country has to offer. Life is short, so make your travel memories worthwhile!
